Chestertown, MD — Today, Heather Mizeur, Democratic candidate for Congress in Maryland’s First District, announced she has earned the support of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Maryland and DC State Council, representing thousands of workers across Maryland.
SEIU is the latest labor organization to back Mizeur, who is the only candidate in the First District field to earn labor endorsements. Mizeur has already earned the support of prominent national organizations, seven members of Maryland’s congressional delegation, and dozens of state and local elected officials. During her eight years in the state legislature, Mizeur was a consistent champion for Maryland workers and their families.
“Heather Mizeur has long been a champion for Maryland workers and their families, and SEIU is proud to offer our highest endorsement,” said Pia Morrison, President of SEIU Local 500. “Her unwavering advocacy on labor issues has been and remains critical to amplifying the voices of Maryland’s workers. Coming from seven generations of farmers and as the daughter of a factory welder, Heather’s bold leadership combined with her lived experience is exactly what is needed to push forward the policies that impact our members the most. In SEIU’s quest to improve the lives of workers and their families, we can think of no better partner than Heather Mizeur.”
“Earning the support of SEIU, an organization that is so strongly dedicated to championing workers’ rights, is deeply personal for me. As the daughter of a 32-year factory welder, much of my family history was defined by labor strikes against his corporate employer, where union members like my Dad fought for better wages and benefits,” said Heather Mizeur, Democratic candidate for Congress in Maryland’s First District. “SEIU represents thousands of Marylanders and has delivered numerous victories for our workers. I will stand with organized labor and Maryland’s working families in the Congress, just as I did in the state Legislature.”
Mizeur’s momentum continues to grow, as she racks up new endorsements from prominent Maryland organizations and leaders. Campaign finance reports showed she out-raised incumbent Congressman Andy Harris in all four quarters of 2021 and broke the record for off-year fundraising in the First District.
As the fastest growing education and non-profit union in the Mid-Atlantic, SEIU Local 500 represents over 20,000 members who work in colleges, universities, public schools, nonprofits, early childhood education, and much more across Maryland and Washington, D.C.
